Company Profile & History

Chef Specialties Company was started in 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, and has been producing quality pepper mills for over 65 years. We pride ourselves on every element that goes into the making of our mills and products.

The company was purchased by the Pierotti Family and moved to its current location in the hills of Western Pennsylvania in 1974. A firm commitment was made to increase the business with integrity, honesty, and a true concern for the customers needs.

After extensive research, the company redesigned the grinding mechanism. Using cutlery grade tempered stainless steel for the grinders, and United States grown hardwoods for the bodies of our domestic series pepper mills, Chef Specialties has become the market leader of pepper mills in the foodservice industry in the US. Our grinding mechanisms feature a spring tension system that keeps the grind adjustment consistent, and helps to prevent the top knob from becoming loose in use.

Our domestic made Professional Series ä Pepper Mills are extremely well received in the Commercial Restaurant Market, as well as many fine retail establishments. The high quality that is evident, and the fact that they are made in the United States of America, has great appeal. Our return/repair rate is less than 1/10 th of 1%, the best record in the industry. Our popular 12-inch “President” mill is used in the kitchens of the White House in Washington D.C.

As Chef Specialties business grew, and our markets continued to expand, we realized that we needed to address the customer that required a less expensive pepper mill. The Home Cooking Series Pepper Mill was the answer to the customer’s needs.

The Home Cooking Series was designed for the customers who are looking for the freshly ground pepper flavor, and a good quality product at a popular price point.

Innovation is a strong suit with Chef Specialties. We have been the first to introduce many new styles and options in the pepper mill industry in North America.

Chef Specialties plans to continue expanding its business, now boasting distributors in several countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, South Korea, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile.
