Outdoor Activites
The Smethport area is an excellent choice for those wanting the
experience of outdoor recreation.
Many hunters arrive in the hunting camps nestled in the hollows
on the outskirts of town each autumn. Game hunting is extremely popular
in the area. Deer, bear and turkey are all plentiful in the hills
and valleys of the Allegheny Plateau region that surrounds Smethport.
Fishing is also a popular sport. There are several designated fly
fishing streams near Smethport. Fish are stocked several times a
year in Hamlin Lake, Marvin Creek, Potato Creek, and Kinzua Creek.
Snowmobile, cross-country skiers, and ATV enthusiasts can chose
several trails to travel. Some of these are over improved trails
through beautiful Allegheny National Forest near Smethport, or over
old abandoned railroad grades, and old logging roads that permeate
the area. The Seneca Highlands Snowmobile Club sponsors snowmobile
radar runs at the McKean County Fair Grounds on Saturday, Feb. 18,
2006. The all-day event includes a chicken barbecue and a ride over
trails to the Forest House at Keating Summit. The club can be contacted

Bicycling is growing in popularity due to widening of U.S. Route
6 and its designation as a biking route. The “Wheel Around
The Hub” 53 mile bike race held in late September during Smethport’s
Victorian Weekend adds local flavor to the sport. Motorcycle enthusiasts
also find Route 6 a popular route for a weekend getaway, especially
during the height of the autumn foliage season.
Nature photography is also a popular outdoor pursuit. There are
abundant wildlife species, wild flowers, and scenic vistas, often
with vibrant rainbows, colorful autumn foliage, and brilliant sunsets.
There are many examples of Americana along the narrow country roads
outside of town. The visitor will find old country churches, rolling
hills, quaint farms, and other unique slices of rural America that
have disappeared a generation ago when they were replaced by the
suburbs of ever-expanding urban centers.
Hiking and camping are popular outdoor sports, also. Large rock
outcroppings are scattered in several areas throughout the region,
and offer an exciting destination for the hiker traveling through
the county’s abundant forests.
